ARt and Design
Miami, FL November
The Art Basel is a world renowned display of modern creativity that circles the globe from Switzerland to Miami to Hong Kong, only three places in the world get a taste of this revolutionary modern art and design. This November, Art Basel knocked on Miami Beach's door and luckily I was able to answer, considering I live in the luscious 305 myself. An amazing display of color and geometric insanity provided for an array of celebrities, icons, and artists to set out for the show. Now this is what their press will tell you, but since we are breaking walls down, let's point out some truths here. They say the Art Basel is full of bullshit, just a bunch of pointless sculptures and paintings that when you look at them I can guarantee almost 99% say this, "Hey, I can do this". The thing is you didn't. Yes, we all look at a painting of a jug of water with a goldfish in it priced for millions, and think, what fucking idiot is going to buy this? But what we don't realize is that is the whole point of the Art Basel is not to buy any canvas you see but to lure a diverse crowd of eccentric people to all stare at that one canvas that can range from beautiful to "Jesus Christ who on Earth painted this shit", because I like to think of it as we are the art. A diaspora of different people with different backgrounds all looking at and wondering the same things, yet perceiving every stoke in our own way. So yes, one might look at the jug with the goldfish priced for millions and call it straight blasphemy, but then again, one can look at it and see a lost soul trapped in an enclosing world restraining their freedom. Art isn't art without us, the audience, looking at it and criticizing its every inch; in the end, it's all lines and shading, but when it comes together and pierces through your eye, that is when it becomes art. The Art Basel is a beautiful collection of modern pieces, but in reality, the Art Basel is a beautiful collection of people from all over the world sharing their culture and tastes through the power of modern creativity and design.
